(i) A coffee-maker is regulated so that it takes an average of 5.8 min to brew a cup of coffee with a standard deviation of 0.6 min. According to Chebyshev's theorem, what percentage of the times that this coffee-maker is used will the brewing time take anywhere from 4.6 min to 7 min.
(ii) Give your reason why the Chebyshev's theorem is applied in part (i).
(iii) Do you think that the percentage found in part (i) is accurate? Please explain.

In Hungary (population: 10 million) there is a chance to win an Apple Macbook. You have to buy a kind of beer :) and on the back of the label of each bottle there is a code that you can send in through the internet.

Before the game started, a computer randomly selected two dates (days, hours, minutes, maybe seconds as well) a week. If you send your code exactly at the selected times, or you are the first after the selected dates, you win (i.e. you can win two Macbooks every week).
This game lasts for four more weeks. The beer is Stella Artois, which is relatively expensive here, so it is not for the masses.

I am curious, how many codes do I have to send them every day so it becomes VERY likely that I win a Macbook?

My friend and I have recently begun an email correspondence. Every weekend we send each other a question in our area of expertise. While I do posses a very logical mind, I am by no means a great mathematician, he is. This week his question to me was: "Why is an equation that contains a number divided by zero undefined?"

The answer I came up with is: "An equation containing a number divided by zero is undefined for it compromises the validity of known mathematical laws."

In explanation: "If we take the fraction 4/2. We know for a fact that this is equal to 2. We should therefore be able to reverse the process and come to the logical conclusion that 2x2 is equal to 4. In contrast take the fraction 5/0, the two most logical guesses at the solution to this fraction would be 5 and 0. When trying to reverse the process we come to 5x0 and 0x0 respectively. Neither of which equal the original fraction 5/0. This constitutes an inconsistency in mathematical law."
