x = 3 + root8
=> 1/x = 1 / ( 3 + root8 ) = ( 3 - root8 ) / ( 3^2 - 8 )
= 3 - root8

Now,

x^2 + ( 1/x )^2
= ( x - 1/x )^2 + 2
= ( 3 + root8 - 3 + root8)^2 + 2
= 34

xsquare+1/xsquare =

( 3 + 8^0.5)^2 + 1/( 3 + 8^0.5)^2 =

( 3 + 8^0.5)( 3 + 8^0.5) + 1/[( 3 + 8^0.5)( 3 + 8^0.5)] =

(9 + 3 * 8^0.5 + 3 * 8^0.5 + 8) + 1/(9 + 3 * 8^0.5 + 3 * 8^0.5 + 8) =

( 17 + 6* 8^0.5) + 1/( 17 + 6* 8^0.5) =

(multiple top and bottom of fraction by complement to get rid of radical in the denominator)

( 17 + 6* 8^0.5) + 1*( 17 - 6* 8^0.5)/( 17 + 6* 8^0.5)( 17 - 6* 8^0.5) =

( 17 + 6* 8^0.5) + ( 17 - 6* 8^0.5)/(289 - 36*8) =

( 17 + 6* 8^0.5) + ( 17 - 6* 8^0.5)/1 =

34

(3 + sqrt(8))² = 17 + 6 sqrt(8)

1/x² = 1 / (17 + 6 sqrt(8))
= (17 - 6 sqrt(8)) / [(17 + 6 sqrt(8)) (17 - 6 sqrt(8))]
= (17 - 6 sqrt(8)) / (17² - 6² * 8)
= (17 - 6 sqrt(8))

then
x² + 1/x² = 17 + 6 sqrt(8) + 17 - 6 sqrt(8)
= 34

But I am not sure how far you need to go.
