Here is the question I am having troubling figuring out how to solve.

A recent study by the Island Resort Taxi Drivers Association showed that the mean fare charged for service from the beach to the airport is $18.00 and the standard deviation is $3.50. We select a sample of 15 fares.

a) What is the likely hood that the sample mean is between $17 and $20?
b) what do we have to assume to make the above calculation?

Any help just to get me started would be greatly Appreciated

I seem not to be grasping the concept of "implicit differentiation". I already know the power rule, product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule.

For example, a problem in my calculus book asks me to find the derivative of x * y + 2x + 3x^2 = 4 by (a) setting the equation equal to "y", and (b) using implicit differentiation.

I already can solve part a of this problem, but i don't know how to do part b. Here's what I've got:

x * y + 2x + 3x^2 = 4
(d/dx)(x) * (d/dx)(y) + (d/dx)(2x) + (d/dx)(3x^2) = (d/dx)(4)
1 * (d/dx)(y) + 2 + 6x = 0

Then I tried to follow the book's example, and did:
(d/dx)(y) = (d/dy)(y) * (d/dx) = 1 * (d/dx)

So, how does this implicit differentiation work and what do I do now, considering I'm correct?

Hip Breadths and Aircraft Seats: Engineers want to design seats in commercial aircraft so that they are wide enough to fit 98% of all males. (Accommodating 100% of males would require very wide seats that would be much too expensive.) Men have hip breadths that are normally distributed with a mean of 14.4in and a standard deviation of 1.0in (based on anthropometric survey data from Gordon, Clauser) Find P98. That is, find the hip breadth for men that separates the smallest 98% from the largest 2%.

My question relates to the power set of any set S, denoted P(S). + is defined by +: u+v-> (uUv)\(unv) (U=union, n=intersection, \=complement), x is defined by x: uv-> unv, for u, v members of P(S). The identity law states that there exist 1 a member of P(S) such that 1 is not equal to 0 and a1=1a=a for all a members of S. But when S is the empty set, 1=0=empty set. So, is it still a commutative ring with unity?
