When you add a negative number, you're really just subtracting.
So 8 - 5 is the same thing as 8 + negative 5.

Negative 4 minus six is a bit trickier. Think of it in terms of money. If you owe your mom four dollars and then you borrow six dollars more, how many dollars do you owe your mom? 10. So you're -4 + -6 = -10. Since we said above that adding a negative is the same as subtracting, you can tell that we just did -4 - 6 = -10.

Now that same -10... How could you owe ten dollars if someone gave you four dollars? Easy, if you owed 14 dollars, and someone gave you four dollars, you'd still owe 10 bucks. So
-4 - 6 = -10 = 4 + -14

For the third one, 396 + -400 -- think in terms of money. You HAVE 396 bucks, you spend 400. Now how much do you have? You OWE $4, so -4 is the answer. Alternatively, if you use the adding a negative is the same as subtracting, then you get:

396 + -400 = 396 - 400 = -4

Hope this helps. :-)
