There are two ways to get this. One is to find the decimal equivalent of the fraction 7/8 and then add this to the whole number 3.

7 divided by 8 = 0.875

add the whole number 3 + 0.875 = 3.875

The other is to turn the original mixed number into a single fraction and then divide:

3 = 24/8
3 + 7/8 = 24/8 + 7/8 = 31/8 now divide
31/8 = 3.875
