Ten years ago your friend invested in a plot of land with the idea of eventually building a summer cottage on it. His plan was to place a "nest egg" of $12,000 in a long term Certificate of Deposit which paid 8% interest over a period of 20 years, compounded monthly. At the end of the 20 years, he would use the money to build the cottage.
The problem was the plot had 8 prairie dogs on it 10 years ago when he acquired the ground.
This year he made a count of the prairie dogs and found there were 102 on the same plot! A biologist friend assured him that the prairie dogs were growing exponentially according to the law of natural growth, and something needed to be done.
So....
1) What would be the FORMULA for the exponential growth of the prairie dog population.
2)approximately how many years from now will the population reach 365 prairie dogs.
3) approximately how large the population will be 10 years from now

My math books just lists the definition of functions which are continuous intervals (i.e. they are continous on every point of that interval etc...), but a question asks you to find the intervals over which a function is continous (e.g, f(x) = x + sqrt(1 - x^2) ) and I couldn't find a method for that anywhere? Isn't there a particular technique for doing that, like there is for proving a function is continuous on a point?

i have an old, pre-calculator, device called an Arithma. At the bottom is says Addiator and Made in Germany. It's an adding/subtracting tool. there are 6 columns in one color, then two in another color to the right of those, and numbers 9-0 along the sides of each column. There are 2 sections of these, with one labeled Addition and the other Subtraction. There is a slender stick that fits in slots next to each number and moves the column. between the top section and the bottom section there are 6 holes, and the numbers change in those as the column are moved. i have tried to work it, but i guess i am moving the wrong columns, as the totals in the 6 holes are not what i expect them to be.
