Three buisness women need to rent a car for a day. the cost is $30 so they each pay$10. as they approach their rental car, the owner at the counter says "wait theres been a change. its your lucky day. the fee is only $25. heres $5 back." since the women are in a hurry and do not want to split the $5 they give the owner a $2 tip and they keep $3. so each women paid $10-$1 (money they each got back) = $9, times 3 is $27. If you add the $2 tip u get $29!!! wheres the extra dollar?

A boat is traveling upstream at 14mph with respect to the river that is flowing at 6mph (with respect to the ground). A man runs directly across the boat, from one side to the other at 6mph (with respect to the boat).
The speed of the man with respect to the ground is:
a 10mph
b 14 mph
c 18.5 mph
d 21 mph
e 26 mph

I have no clue how to work this, my book gives me only problems with parts moving in the same direction. Also, I assume the man is running from side to side and not from the front to the back of the boat? And if he is, I don't think his running is of influence since it's perpendicular to the movementof the boat and river. If he is running from front to back (or back to front) shouldnt the problem state that?

OK, please stop telling me I am submitting low level algebra, but this is why I am here. To learn, and it's hard when people treat you badly online.
commutative and associative properties of multiplication and exponential notation to simplify this product. y(y*5)(wy). Use y=2 and w = 5 to check your answer.

My Answer:
2 (2*5) (10)
(10) (10) = 100
2 * 100 = 200

Teacher: Good, you did ONE HALF of the solution check. However, you did not SIMPLIFY at all, which was what was asked for.
