OK, please stop telling me I am submitting low level algebra, but this is why I am here. To learn, and it's hard when people treat you badly online.
commutative and associative properties of multiplication and exponential notation to simplify this product. y(y*5)(wy). Use y=2 and w = 5 to check your answer.

My Answer:
2 (2*5) (10)
(10) (10) = 100
2 * 100 = 200

Teacher: Good, you did ONE HALF of the solution check. However, you did not SIMPLIFY at all, which was what was asked for.

What you were supposed to do is simplify the product using the following exponential rule

(x^m)*(x^n) = x^(m+n)

The simplified form of the product would have been

5y^3w

Then you would substitute 2 and 5

5*2^3*5 =
5*8*5 = 200

This agrees with what you got without simplifying. That's what they wanted you to do.

Your teacher is even ruder than some of the people here. What your teacher is asking you to do is to find the simplest way of expressing y(y*5)(wy). This becomes 5wy³ (detailed below). The solution check would be to substitute y=2 and w=5 into both expressions to see that they both give you the same answer.

y(y*5)(wy)
y(5y)(wy) commutative property
y(5y)(yw) commutative property
(y*5)y(yw) associative property
(5y)y(yw) commutative property
5(yy)(yw) associative property
5y²(yw) exponent addition
5(y²y)w assosiative property
5y³w exponent addition
5wy³ commutative property

BTW, in applied mathematics, I would have done all that in a single step. It sounds as though your teacher's insistence on strict adherence to the rules, writing out your work in exacting detail, and checking every single answer (which doesn't demonstrate that the equality holds in every case - only the symbolic proof does that) is inhibiting you from an actual understanding of the concepts involved. I feel sorry for you. Hope you get a better teacher next year.

Simplify means to reduce the number of terms while keeping the equation the same. Here y(y*5) can be replaced by 5*y^2.
And 5*y^2(wy) and be replaced by 5*w*y^3.

Hi. My Dear Aunt Sadie. Multiply first, Divide second, Add third, Subtract fourth. Start inside of parentheses first. Ask your teacher to explain the simplify part until you understand. Then it gets fun!

2 (2*5) (10) this is correct
then
=2(10)(10)=200

the second and third lines seem unrelated but correct

the product is 5y^3w=5*2^3*5=200
your answer is absolutely right

simplification leads to:

y(y*5)(wy) = (5y^2)(wy) = 5wy^3

hence using y=2 and w=5 we have 5*5*(2^3) = 5*5*8 = 200
