Let f(x),g(x) be any rational functions of x (over the rational numbers).Show that f(r) = g(r) => f(-r) = g(-r). [Note that we assume that if f(x) or g(x) is p(x)/q(x) then q(r) =/=0; so, for example, q(x) = x^2 - d is not allowed. Hint: observe that since r is irrational if a,b,c,d are rational then a + br = c + dr => a=c and b=d]

6. A biologist exposed a mosquito population to a moderate concetration of DDT, a powerful pesticide; approximately 2% of these mosquitos survived. These surving mosquitos were allowed to interdreed ane produce offspring. When the offspring were exposed to DDT, approximately 94% survived. Which of the following is the best conclusion you could draw from these observations alone?
a. DDT resistance is a benefical trait for mosquitos in the natural environment.
b. Exposure to DDT indused a mutation to DDT resistance which was inherited by the offspring.
c. A mutation for DDT resistance is a recessive gene and is expressed in homozygous individuals.

Let f(x)=x^6+16x^3. Find the local minimum and maximum points and values of the function f(x).

This problem was on my third calculus test and I got half of it correct, but I believe in actuality that I got the entire problem right.

I came up with two critical values of (x=0, x=-2)

Local Minimum at x=-2, with a value of -64
Local Maximum at x=0, with a value of 0

Could someone please double check this problem for me to make sure that it is in fact incorrect.

Thank You

I found this sight http://www.ibiblio.org/lunar/school/index.html and I was seriously bummed when I found out that the sight had not been updated in over 11 years. I was wondering if anyone knew of a currant project like this one (if so pleas post a link to there website). If no one knows of such a group who would be interested in helping me to start one? It would basically be an online think tank, we would work on practical designs for launching systems, space craft, space stations, lunar and Martian colonies and whatever else we decide to work on (it doesn’t have to be space related). eventually we may even submit our ideas to the government or one or more corporations in an attempt to get funding for them (thou that’s quite a ways off if it happens at all)

Let me make a few things clear right now. First this would not be a fanfic or sci-fi group (so no transporters or warp drive), my hope is that even if nothing we design ever gets built maybe it will inspire something that will be built and lead to a better future. Second, let me say that you do not need a degree to join the think tank (I’ve never been to a day of collage and I’m the one starting the group).
