Having lunch today, one of us had a baked potato and the other a plate of chips. Now I know that the baked spud is far better for you as a slow release energy food but if the chips are just chopped up potato why are they so much worse for you?

Is is just because they are fried?

Also - as a side question - what exactly do nutrients do for you?

This originally had me completely befuddled, but I think I got it. Problem is, there is no way to "justify" my results, since I got to a certain point and simply used the "Guess and Check" method. I think I have a decent explanation and proof. Could someone check it for me? Here's the orignal problem:

One car has twice the mass of a second car, but only half as much KE. When both cars increase their speed by 6.0 m/s, they then have the same KE. What were the original speeds of the two cars?

Point where I got: (Initial Vi1 + 6)^2 = 2 (Initial Vi2 + 6)^2
This is what I tried from this point: I graphed each of them as
y = (x + 6)^2
y = 2(x+6)^2

I got to a point where at x = -6, y = 0 for both. Using this "explanation", I said V1 - V2 = 6.

Then, using guess and check with V1 - V2 = 6, I got approximately V1 Initial = 14.4775, V2 Initial= 8.4775

Is there a way to get the answers I got without using the guess and check method?

PLEASE HELP!!!

It dawned on me that the big bang has a bit of magic thrown in for good measure, whereby space itself inexplicably expanded faster than the spead of light for a while and then stopped expanding.

But what if it didn't? What if the reason for red shift is not because galaxies are moving away from eachother within space, but is due instead to the ever present expansion of space? What if space expands at a greater and greater rate relative to distance from an observer? From our perspective, distant galaxies would appear to be accelerating away from us (which we observe), there would be an event horizon of sort where the rate of expansion exceeds the speed of light so that the amount of background light would be limited (which we observe).

For this to really make sense, there would have to be a mechanism by which energy/matter is created by such an expansion at some probabilistic rate.

Putting it all together, is this a plausible steady state alternative to the big bang?

plentiful and you can fill up, pour it out and fill up again. Show me
how you can measure exactly 3 litres of water in one of the jars
by using the 2 measuring jars of 5 litre and 3 litre capacities. The
first person who show me correctly in detail will get 10 points from me.

Geology is a science. It is deemed by geologists to be an IMMINENT reality that a vast earthquake will devastate the west coast of the USA. In view of this fact (based on decades of observation) what provision is in place, or is planned, by the United States Government at Federal level (in co-operation with the states likely to be affected) to reduce the loss of life ?

To say the least, these questions cannot forever be ducked and avoided by either geologists or politicians.
