The 1995 Hanshin earthquake that levelled the city of Kobe in Japan, killing 5,000 and displacing countless more, was 7.2 in magnitude and far more damaging than Katrina. Within one year, the Japanese were able to more or less get things back to normal.

What is it with the repairs after Katrina, one year on? Some areas reportedly look the same as they did immediately after the disaster.

I am gutted ... Steve will always be a true Australian Hero in my books. Yes he was 'out there' however he did more good for Australian Tourism, and educating everyone about wildlife (both native Australian and international) not to mention his great work with the Quarantine Department .. than a million shrimps on the BBQ.

i get really annoyed at the phrase 9/11 - is it me or is it disrepectful to abbreviate such an event? wasnt it horrific enough to call it the september 11th attacks or cant people just be bothered to say it? 9/11 sounds like a rapper thing or a t shirt? It sounds very fox news and i dont like it. They started saying 7/7 on sky news (about our bombings) and it so seemed like they were following the trend and honestly, i dont think brit reporters were comfortable with it.
