Ministers last night faced calls for a fresh inquiry into the suspension of the bribery probe into BAE Systems' Saudi arms deals after it was revealed how Tony Blair intervened in the decision.

Newly released secret documents show the then Prime Minister begged his Attorney General to scrap a Serious Fraud Office inquiry, fearing it would jeopardise future fighter-jet contracts.

When the SFO controversially abandoned its investigation into the Al-Yamamah arms deal, Mr Blair insisted the decision had been taken on security grounds.

But a letter from Mr Blair to Lord Goldsmith, then Attorney General, just six days before the suspension was announced, shows that he also highlighted the "critical difficulties" the probe could cause to the sale of Typhoon aircraft to the Saudis.

The document, dated December 8, 2006, has been released to the High Court during a legal action brought by anti-corruption campaigners.

In the letter, Mr Blair acknowledged an international agreement preventing the consideration of national economic interest but nevertheless referred to "concern" over "damage" being done to relations with the Saudis.

During Sadam's rule, Iraq had an autocratic democracy of sorts, but near top prosperity and education among Arab states and relatively unopressed women, fashionably dressed in European cloths.

Now, with the British leaving and the US getting ready to do the same, Iraq has Shia domination by terrorist groups, hardly living conditions and the women are being ordered to cover up under the hijab, or die.

When the US leaves it will surely be another Muslim hell like Iran and Afganistan.

After all that loss of life and money, have not Bush and Blair made it worse for them and us?

Once they approached the subject with an open mind.
I'm talking about people with a grasp of the laws of Newtonian physics, nothing fancy, just being familiar with the agreed laws of physics and mechanics.
By the way, what was the Popular Mechanics thing about? I read it, and was bemused that its physical sophistry was so clumsy.

Is it right that evidence given under torture be used for the good of the western world.

Here's an example, you are a senior member of the Home office and information is given to you that a bomb attack is planned for parts of London.
However, this information was gathered from a suspected terrorist who was being tortured.

The information given would allow you to arrest the culprits before the event even though it may be classed as unethical.

The chances are that any case against the would be bombers would be kicked out of court due to the source of the evidence.
The liberal brigade would be berating you for using such evidence and accuse you of compliance with torture techniques.
The media would stir the public into screaming for your resignation and the opposition would make hay with your reputation.

You could potentially save hundreds of lives.

What would you do?
