The banister on my staircase has a sticky residue on it. I've tried Murphy's, Good for Wood and just plan hot soapy water. How can I get the hardwood to a natural smooth finish without totally refinishing it?

I had a sloping garden ten years ago, and we levelled it up for easier maintenance. Unfortunately, it started to fall away on on side, and we had to remove a beautiful pergola, and an underneath patio of york stone. When I was digging at the weekend I found a six inch deep slab of concrete which is about 10 feet long and 2 feet wide. My husband thinks this was put in to retain the garden. I think we should dig it up as the erosion has completely cracked it which is why the pergola had to come down, so I don't think it is very useful. I know nothing about construction. Help!

I have many trees, shrubs, and flower gardens in my backyard, and my lawn is just me mowing in circles around things and it doesn't look very nice when I'm finished. How can I mow it so it looks like the pros did it-- I'm expecting company and I'd like the house to look nice!

I'm not heavy, and the matress wasn't cheap (was supposed to be the 'deluxe' pocket-sprung model), but already after 2.5 years it feels lumpy! I turn it both ways every couple of months.
Any similar bad-buys?
