as opposed to any of those expensive coatings that don't even really work. i want it to be shiny and a golden wood color. is this unheard of?

If you are using real logs instead of log siding, your process is a lot different than the above answer. First you must pressure wash the logs to get them clean. After that you treat the logs with bug killer to ensure that nothing will live in the wood. After that you can stain the logs any color that you want. You can also mix stains to achieve the honey golden color that you are looking for. If you are using real logs (round, D, etc..) don't miss the steps of pressure washing and treating them. If you want to shellac, it should be fine. Good Luck

I've had 3 log homes built. After the siding gets put on contact a painter, they will spray it . . . It is not expensive and it'll look just like you are talking about.

For the interior walls, I always had poly sprayed on, makes it look good n' clean all the time.
