don't buy one hammer. You need three.
(1) medium size claw hammer for nails, generally fixing things
(2) a "soft" hammer, which has a leather head one side and a copper head the other side. This is for hitting things you don't want to mark, perhaps wood.
(3) a light "tack" hammer for tacks, picture hooks etc

Don't tell boyfriends you have a toolkit.

Go to a hardwear store and buy a small hammer! Or use a heel of a shoe or whatever's handy! It's not hard to find the right hammer.
Sorry. Seriously, if you really are totaly lost, ask at the hardwear store. Tell them what you're hammering and what you're hammering it in to, and they should be able to help.

you can buy a hammer on EBay for a lot less then you can find it in a hardware store. However, you have to pay to get it shipped to you and it won't be there for a few days. Good Luck

A 12 oz hammer should be plenty for what you want to do with it.You should be able to find one well within your budget.

Go to the hardware store. Check out the different ones and buy the one you like the best. You know what size you're looking for.
