I have many trees, shrubs, and flower gardens in my backyard, and my lawn is just me mowing in circles around things and it doesn't look very nice when I'm finished. How can I mow it so it looks like the pros did it-- I'm expecting company and I'd like the house to look nice!

I have exactly the same problem. I have many trees and beds in my lawn.

- Use an edger/weed trimmer to clear around the trees rather than try to mow circles around them. This will give a better 'edge' and you should be able to then mow relatively staight lines.

- Check that the blades on the mower are sharp. This will give a more even cut and will stop the cut edges from turning brown (leaving a nice green look to the lawn).

- Water several times the week before they arrive. A good soaking will green up the lawn and make it look healthy.

- Mow a few days before they arrive. This will give the lawn a chance to recover from the mowing. It will also let you touch it up if you missed a bit.

If you have a bagger on your mower, use it before your company arrives. It will "vacuum" your lawn for a very clean look. Try to mow the least amount of lines as possible to prevent lots of tire tracks. Avoid running over the same places. You can always come back with your edger and trim up.

Mow higher. It will provide more leeway with mistakes and provide a more lush, green look. Apply this to your edging as well. Just because you have a power tool doesn't mean you should scalp around trees and edges :)

Mow in a different pattern every time you mow....mow horizontal to your house one week and then vertical the next time you mow...makes a huge difference! Also, get out the weedeater and trim around everything!! I bet it will look awesome for your company!

once mowed, try using a roller going up and down to create stripped pattern

Concentrate harder on the mowing.

Cook in advance.

All the best!
