In almost 99% of things we eat, if you look at the ingredients, you will notice that corn syrup is usually among the ingredients. Although there are many other things that are contained in foods, corn syrup is so frequent among those ingredients that it has brought it to my attention. What does corn syrup contain or do that makes it such a universal food ingredient? Is it a flavor enhancer? Preservative? What?

I have dry goods - rice, spices, etc, which end up spoiling from moth's intrusion. They are kept in air tight plastic containers (usually original packaging), but they still seem to get inside.

Only safe methods please - no moth balls in my flour.

For instance, I got sick one time after eating kettle corn and, to this day, the smoky-sweet smell of kettle corn still makes me want to wretch. My brother's the same way about tater tots.

Does it mean that they use sugar substitutes such as corn syrup or even diet sweeteners? I usually see this on fruit pies. Does it mean just the natural sugar found in fruit? And do they taste as good and the regular ones made with sugar? I should know this but I don't.
