I always considered stew to be in the "soup family" while casserole was more of a solid that has layers you cut up into slices (similar to lasagna). Ok, I got the the def. on the net

Stew:
a. A dish cooked by stewing, especially a mixture of meat or fish and vegetables with stock.
b. A mixture likened to this dish

Casserole:
a. A dish, usually of earthenware, glass, or cast iron, in which food is both baked and served.
b. Food prepared and served in such a dish

So apparently the difference is that casserole MUST be served in a dish otherwise it is not a legal (proper, orderly, real) casserole. But a stew does not have to be served in a dish. Heck, it can be served in a milk bucket, or, if you're brave you could try spooning scalding hot stew into a napkin. Hope I helped =]

When cooking a stew is cooked in a pot and a casserole is cooked in a cassterole dish. They probably both have a random consistency, but stew is cooked on the hob, almost like a soup, while a casserole is cooked in an oven, stew is liquid casserole has a pastery base to hold it all togeather.

As has been mentioned, a stew is generally cooked on the stove in a kettle or pot of some sort, while a casserole is baked in a dish in the oven. But also, a stew tends to be more of a thick soup, with the consistency of gravy, often made with some stock, meat and vegetables, while a casserole is generally thick and stiff, and may include starches such as potatoes, noodles or rice, along with things such as milk or cheese to make the casserole creamy. Casseroles sometimes also have a crisp crumb topping.

Casserole's are baked in an oven in most cases. Stews are more of a stove top slow cooked item. A stew could be a casserole if you put it in a dish and baked it.
