OK. Lemme elaborate. I'm trying to play the riff to "The Hand That Feeds" by nine inch nails. getting better; it's pretty fast though. but that's beside the point.

Um, the song requires me to hole down the 3rd fret on the 6th string and then the 5th fret on the on the 5th string. and then you shift that combo up and down a few times.

as you know, that's a pretty wide gap for your 1st and 3rd fingers. I've found it easier to use my pinky instead of the 3rd finger. It works, so I can't complain. But I need to know whether is acceptable in terms of "properly playing the guitar".

I've only been playing for a week or 2 now. should I try to position my hand better so it becomes easier. cuz i've tried, and it doesn't seem to work that way. lol. any suggestions?

It's weird I know, but this song was shown for a few seconds during the 1989 (yes we are going a long way back here!) Oscar awards, it is defintiely much older than that though as it was shown as being sung by a very young Jodie Foster and another boy who could quite possibly be the bloke from the Blue Lagoon movies, I remember one line going like this - and I think it was the end of the chorus - 'Love goes on and on' - does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, I can't get this song out of my head, the problem is I don't know the lyrics to it nor do I know who performed it or even the song title. But I've seen people in here who are very good at deciphering "dum de dah dum" into the actual song, so here goes. It's a hard rock kind of song that was popular around 95-96 i think. I can only remember the guitar riff that seemed to be constant throughout the song... So here goes...

Dat - Dat - Dat - Dah (Start again)

Ok, This was played on one of the lower strings of a lead guitar. When you sing the long "Dowww" you fade down an octave then go up an octave for the following "Dah" and then alternate up and down to the end of the line. The / means go up an octave & the \ means go down an octave. After this riff is played a few times the singer comes in & starts singing the song following the same pitch as the guitar
