OK. Lemme elaborate. I'm trying to play the riff to "The Hand That Feeds" by nine inch nails. getting better; it's pretty fast though. but that's beside the point.

Um, the song requires me to hole down the 3rd fret on the 6th string and then the 5th fret on the on the 5th string. and then you shift that combo up and down a few times.

as you know, that's a pretty wide gap for your 1st and 3rd fingers. I've found it easier to use my pinky instead of the 3rd finger. It works, so I can't complain. But I need to know whether is acceptable in terms of "properly playing the guitar".

I've only been playing for a week or 2 now. should I try to position my hand better so it becomes easier. cuz i've tried, and it doesn't seem to work that way. lol. any suggestions?

The first thing to remember about the "rules",is to discard many of them.Proper technique figures in to much more than what you're speaking of.You can practice doing it the more difficult way to improve your reach etc.But when it comes to playing, always do what inflicts the least trauma on your joints and connective tissue. While the use of the fourth finger(pinky) is important for well rounded playing, there are times when you must choose what breaks the one finger per fret rule.
Sometimes it's all about what best makes you ready to shift to the next string,or position.
Take an E aeolian scale, played three notes per string,I always use the following fingering pattern because it aligns all of the fingers with the next respective position: 123,123,124,124,124,124.This keeps your fingers from getting bunched up and allows maximum speed.

Lots of great guitar players don't follow 'the rules'. Having said that, that's a fairly standard 1st / 3rd finger combination. If you're playing a boogie, you need the fourth finger to be able to move around the combo.

Bottom line, though; do what works for you. The conservatorium probably won't look kindly on "The hand that feeds" as a suitable piece for the entrance exam, anyway, so no loss there.

every guitar player has different sized hands. keep strecthing to eventually get maximum reach on the fret board, but you may decide it's more natural to use your pinky. so what. play how you want to play. there have been many unorthodox guitarists over the years. maybe you'll be one too.

It is kind of a bad habit to get into... but I'm impressed that you have only playing a week and you have enough strength in your pinky to do that!!... but try to stick with index and ring finger because as you get more skillful, you will need your pinky finger for other things... trust me

IF YOU MAKE A HABIT OF PLAYING THAT WAY THEN YOU WILL NEVER INCREASE YOUR LEVEL I AM ALSO A GUITARIST PURE ONE I SUGGEST YOU TO HOLD THE FIFTH FRET WITH YOUR 3rd FINGER THAT POSITION IS VERY IMPORTENT

PRACTISE HARD

Sure why not? It's not wrong... Do what I almost did and headbang and do guitar throws at an acoustic show... THAT's wrong...
