1. Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola)
2. Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick)
3. Ran (Akira Kurosawa)

I'd also like to give special mention to Dr. Strangelove, which I didn't include because it doesn't quite fit under the conventional definition of a "war film."

I was born in the early '80's, and used to watch A Christmas Carol. However, it was a cartoon version that I do not believe was released. I think it was just a TV special. I looked on www.christmasmovies.us/scroogemoves.html, but I know it wasn't Mickey's or Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. Does anyone know what it was acually called and where I can find it? Both of my parents thought the name of the movie was "Ebenezer Scrooge". I loved that movie & my parents recorded it on Vhs when I was little, but my sis accidentally recorded over it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is my birthday, so I don't want a depressing movie, but I don't want to see a Christmas movie either. Any suggestions? If you could give the name of the movie, and the basic plot that would be appreciated.

He hasn't seen his brother in a long time but wants to see him and rides a lawnmower across Iowa to see him. They haven't spoken in like 30 years or so. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks!

Bear in mind that I'm only posting this because I have an compulsive need to make film lists and share them, but feel free to answer it anyway. Mine are:

1. The Great Dictator (Charles Chaplin)
2. The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Vittorio De Sica)
3. The Last Metro (Francois Truffaut)
4. Au revoir les enfants (Louis Malle)
5. The Pianist (Roman Polanski)

And no, I don't think that Schindler's List belongs on this list, the same way that I don't think Steven Spielberg should be allowed near a camera. It's conventional, Hollywood and soulless, and filled with unreasonable, self-hoisted platitudes. A film that has no sensibilities toward the actions of its characters and no soul to coincide with its occasional passionate moments.
