My top five (no particular order):
Agree with DeNiro in Taxi Driver and Brando in On the Waterfront
Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man (and Tom Cruise was pretty good, too...at least he held his own against Hoffman, which is saying something.)
Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption.

My honorable mentions:
Alec Guinness in Bridge on the River Kwai
William Holden in Stalag 17

Sorry I can't work Steve McQueen in there somewhere.

2. Hugh Grant, Sense and Sensibility (pure Hugh, pure classic)
3. Colin Firth, Love Actually (oh the hormones are loose again, he gets number 1)
4. Omar Epps, Love and Basketball (on second thought maybe Omar gets number 1)
5. Gerard Butler, Dear Frankie (he makes Scottish sexy)

Runner up: Denzel Washington, Mississipi Masala (ooooh the butt shot was worth the price of admission)

I cannot think of 5 but John Hurt as John Merrick (The Elephant Man) has to deserve a mention.
