Bear in mind that I'm only posting this because I have a compulsive need to make film lists and share them, but feel free to answer it anyway. Mine are:

1. The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodore Dreyer)
2. The Last Laugh (F.W. Murnau)
3. Dog Star Man (Brakhage)
4. The General (Buster Keaton)
5. City Lights (although any Charlie Chaplin silent would fit here)

Runner-up: (tie) The Man with the Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov), Intolerance (D.W. Griffith)

The Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera is right up there.

Too bad they didn't keep the original ending though.
