Bear in mind that I'm only posting this because I have a compulsive need to make film lists and share them, but feel free to answer it anyway. Mine are:
1. Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola)
2. Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick)
3. Ran (Akira Kurosawa)
4. The Thin Red Line (Terrence Malick)
5. The Battle of Algiers (Gillo Pontecorvo)
Runner-up: The Deer Hunter (Michael Cimino)
I'd also like to give special mention to Dr. Strangelove, which I didn't include because it doesn't quite fit under the conventional definition of a "war film."

I didn't forget Platton. Oliver Stone is a horrible, horrible filmmaker, although that is the closest he's ever come to a good film.

Disincluding Dr. S., working with a loose-ish definition of 'war film':
1. Paths of Glory (yay!)
2. Lawrence of Arabia
3. Das Boot
4. Breaker Morant
5. The Great Escape
6. The General (if it counts!)
7. Glory
8. The Killing Fields
9. Salvador (sorry, I read that you hate Oliver Stone, but I like this one, and it's a much smaller movie than the more bombastic, boring stuff like Platoon)
10. Spartacus

I have seen NONE of these movies.
But Dr. Strangelove definitely would be on my list. Wild movie.
Sort of a 60's version of Crank.
Bridge over River Kwai was good
Zulu was very good.
Batman Returns butler was in it.
Runner up for me would be Red Dawn
I like Rambo II and III.
Why don't they have Rambo III on CD?
Hope this helps. I will see if your list of movies is available for rent at the video store.
My favorite scary movie; Predator. FINALLY! the main character FIGHTS BACK. Too many movies everyone dies, NO ONE picks up anything to fight back. Runner up would be SILENT HILL. At least the two women TRY to fight back. Stupid do-not-fight-back was American Werewolf in London. Remember the guy in the subway. He had an attache and a umbrella. The wolf is after him, so THROW DOWN the attache and the umbrella, and then WORSE - fall down and scream! Give me a break...
