After listening to a radio ad for the new violent horror film, "The Hitcher," followed by an ad from the same movie company inviting people to enter a contest to be "killed" on film, I was struck once again by the utter stupidity of our entire media culture. Films depicting sex - at least an act of life rather than death - have their own special rating, as though it is worse to have sex with someone than to torture and chop him or her up for no reason. But films full of blood and gore, torture and murder and hate _for fun_, that glamorize sick, gruesome violence for amusement - not even to make a political or artistic statement - are only rated R. They're regular movie-theatre fare (even for young kids accompanied by adults). It is utterly absurd to me that our culture is so terrified of sex we would rather ostracize _it_ than bloody murder. Agreement, dissent, comments, opinions?
