About the movie 'The Phantom of the Opera'?

The Phantom with the distorted face. How did he get it. Is he a leper. Acid thrown on his face or something? And I don't understand one thing. He pretends to be the angel of music guiding Christine, right? BUt he is actually an abandoned man who lives in darkness and finds hope in his "obsession" of the voice of Christine?
