Do you like to have a real Christmas tree or a fake one? I can understand having a real Christmas tree. As you say the pine smell whiffing through the house is a great sensory addition to the holidays.

Just for this reason I planted two nice pines in my front yard and decorated them every year. I (we, my family) even place large wrapped boxes under the tree. Of course there is nothing in them except some form of ballast to keep them from blowing away.

Inside the house is a different matter. We have a large home and put up about four artificial trees a year. Each one is decorated to match the original color and decorations of the particular room the tree is in. I am basically a laid back person and found that pulling a fake tree out of its container and placing it into the support pot is very simple. With a real tree shims must be added to keep the tree straight. It has to be constantly watered; chemicals have to be added to the water to reduce the trees flammability, and to keep the needles from falling off. The fake tree takes the same amount of lights and decoration every year. This is not true with a real tree because a larger tree uses more decorations then a smaller one.

Other factors involved in obtaining a real tree are that you are killing a tree. I am not exactly a tree hugger but I can not justify, to myself, why I should kill a tree just so I can reap a couple of month of pleasure. The two that are in my front yard were wild Christmas trees growing in a pot so after X-mass they could be planted and they were. Next is the cost and inconvenience of shopping for the tree. It appears that Christmas has lost its true meaning. People are rude. They shove grab trees right out of your hand and if you say anything Christmas tree rage sets in. I had spent hours searching for the right tree looking from one tree shop to another. I am holding a tree that I feel is right and this guy from thirty feet away yells out to me that he is buying that tree. I guess if someone decides a tree is good enough for my house it probably is also good for his and now I have the choice of fighting over a tree that may not look that great in either house. Being a Black belt in running and screaming I gracefully let him have the forty dollar tree. I then pick up another potential looking tree politely asked if he wants to buy this one also and when he declines I purchase it and take it home which is a job in its self. Once it is home it must be trimmed down to a useable decoration. I feel that the cold feet, running noses and numb fingers bring out the true Christmas spirit in many people. Christmas is over. Now you have to get rid of the body. In my city it must be wrapped in a special bag and put out for pickup on a certain day.

My fake trees are bought in the comfort of a warm store that has many of the same style trees. Some of the stores even offer free coffee, cider, or cocoa. If I am confronted by a crazy I let him have his boxed tree and just grab the next one under his. There is no trimming just pulling out the branches and placing the color coded branches in the same color ring or hole. At this time you can do what ever you want to make putting up the tree next year easier. You can spray the wire end of each branch a color to match the color you sprayed on the ring. Christmas tree in container “A” matches with the decorations in their containers that are marked tree “A lights and bulbs” In fact each room’s decorations are labeled in the same manner.

As far as Pine smell I burn pine oil and incense and it has the same effect. One other thought. If my tree gets knocked over all I have to do is pick it up and fluff the branches. With a real tree there is a problem if any branches do break or bend. It makes a lovely tree look pathetic. I have left this, the best point, for last. I do not have pine needles covering my floor. Even if you vacuum inevitably you will find a pine needle stuck deeply and firmly in your palm or knee.

The choice is yours and it dose not matter which way you choose for it is the fun in the decorating and only you can define what your fun is. Either way have a great holiday and a safe Christmas

I have always had and will continue to have a fake tree. I am not a fan of the pine smell and my son and I have terrible allergies.
