When I saw "Clerks" for the first time I was 18. Given the content of the movie of coarse it was very appealing. I also was a clerk in a video store so I related to the movie a lot and yes often quoted phrases from the movie ALL the time at work, in bars, and just hanging around. (I think every hardcore fan of this movie did the same) This went on for years actually. A rebirth of it happened every time Kevin Smith did another movie with his beloved characters. In fact the BEST Halloween EVER was when I dressed as Jay (circa Clerks) and my friend was Silent Bob (circa, well ANY) ahh memories...uh Anyway, you almost felt a responsibility to catch up on these characters constantly. It was fun stuff.
But now much like the characters in this new Clerks movie, I've grown older. I am post-college days, and I'm 28. I find "making fun of pop-culture" just as lame as "being excited about it". There are friends I have that still have “the tude", (if you have it, you understand) but it's just depressing.
I WANT to get excited about Clerks 2. I WISH I still cared about Dante & Randall, and freaked when Jay & Bob bust in on screen...but I can't. Not like the ol' days. If this came out between 1995-2001, I would have been in line, in costume, arguing over who was more a fan of Smith's work and played trivia with dorks wearing "Bezerker" T-shirts...but I can't.
I am not criticizing the movie, the sequel, or Kevin Smith. I just out grew the jokes. Kevin is giving a new generation of Jay's, Brody's, and Dante's a piece of the franchise. Have at it kiddo's, but remember our version was better...and in B&W.
