Is the word 'çhanges' the subject ? If so , could you tell me why there is no comma between the words 'event' and 'sweeping'?

Here's what I was pondering the other day. Let's say you have this sentence:

"A lot of people are coming to my party."

Is this grammatically correct? The subject is "lot" or is it? If it is, then it's singular. So "are" techninally should be "is." But...

"A lot of people is coming to my party."

It just sounds wrong. But is that technically the correct way to say it? Or is "a lot" an exception to the rules of the English language. Thanks for any insight.

I know I've always talk a bit funny however I normally don't realize it until people point it out. Apparently i can not pronounce my "th", instead I would say "d". Such as "thirty" becomes "dirty". That add in with my chinese accent makes conversation really really hard. How can i fix my speech and lose my accent?
