When do you know which of these is correct? We all know what the other person who says it means, and in the end it probably dosn't matter I suppose. I really would like to know how you can instantly tell whether you are correct.
I asked this question the other day and had some interesting answers. PLEASE continue answering again because this is THE most confusing aspect of english grammar. I still cannot get my head round it.

I know of some web-based companies that sell items (all kinds of items) but don't maintain any stock. Whenever an order is placed, the company orders the items from another company to ship directly to the customer. This avoids the overhead of maintaining an inventory. Anyone know what the term is for this?

I know what this means: somebody got a haircut.

How did it originate?

I am curious!

It is back to school time and there was this young man who was going into the 5th Grade today and I commented, "I see you got your ears lowered." All of a sudden he became self conscious about his ears and his sister who is going to be a Sophomore inquired, "what does that mean?" I replied, "it's an acknowledgment of a man getting a hair cut." This was not enough to suit her...she wanted to know how this expression came about...so, I told her I would go on Yahoo Answers and ask the question.

Oxymoron. Does it has to be two adjacent words or two words that contradicts each other but not adjacent?
