I think it is a combination two words in Sanskrit- "Swarna" and "Deep", which mean "gold" and "lamp". The Swarna dweep, must have been corrupted into Sandeep. Do you know, Sri Lanka, in good olden days, was known as Swarna Deep, for it was known its glittering beauty and serenity. From the word-Swarna Deep, the English word serendipity, meaning quietude and beauty has been derived.
