Hi y all has given a succinct answer. I would only add that it was the result of a horror story competition among a group of friends, which included the poets Shelley and Byron. Mary Shelley was only 19 or so when the book came out. Frankenstein is the name of the scientist and not of the huge misshapen monster which unexpectedly emerges from his scientific experiment (he has collected human parts from various sources and infused it with new energy) , which he then comes to regret deeply. He is the modern Prometheus: the ancient Prometheus was punished by the gods for stealing fire from them and bestowing it on humanity.

Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley, the wife of the famous English poet (Percy) Shelley.
The complete title of the book is "Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus". She finished the novel in 1817 and it was published shortly thereafter.
