Like instead of not being able to see letters right, its numbers. Because numbers look so weird to me, I might as well be looking at Chinese. I'm not stupid or retarded, when I was in school I always had a reading level well above my grade but I did horrible in math because numbers just dont make any sense.

My daughter is 17 and will soon be transitioning into adulthood. As a developmentally disabled adult I was wondering if there are some states that offer better services or benefits to assist the disabled in terms of assisted living, vocational rehab. etc.

I was also wondering if there are other families out there that have any insight into what happens as a child with a disability transitions into adulthood? How your family copes with the financial strain? What help you get with providing a care giver to an adult who cannot be alone?

What are some good sites to look at if you think your child might be autistic?

2006-10-01 18:53:52 · 4 answers · asked by glitz_and_glitter 3

Children with autistic spectrum disorders suffer through poor provision of specialist teachers and are often left behind in mainstream schools , where they are often misunderstood, left to one side in classrooms and the target for bullies. To get any help parents have to fight the local education authorities to get a statement of special educational needs which often has to be contested and fought over in every detail to overcome the unwillingness of local authorities to provide any assistance and funding. As recent figures suggest 1 in 100 children now suffer it is about time schools were given appropriate staff trained for these childrens needs, rather than farming them into pastoral support or left in the corner with some teaching assistant with no clue how to communicate the lesson to the child in an appropiate way. Every child has a right to a decent education so why is it the local education authorities fail to provide this and leave these kids destined to a meaningless life?

i have a 2yearold grandson and he's not speaking words, but he does communicate in his own way, he's very bright, knows which block goes in which space, if asked to show you something, he can, he's read to all the time and when asked where is the cow,pig or sheep or anything else he has been taught, he's alright most of the time. he's an only child, but goes to a play group once a week and does a lot of things, color, fingerpaint, glue objects on projects. some one told my daughter she should put him in a special ed class because of his not talking. she tried it and was very against the program, concerned that he would imitate some of the bad behaviors from the other children. my husband and i went and spent the day with him. there were only two other kids in the room, one 4 and the other 5. these were children with learning difficulties and the class was very structured. for kids with adhd i can understand needing the structure. but, my grandson has none of this.
