We are trying to decide on whether to put our child in a montessori preschool or just a traditional preschool. We like that the montessori allows the child to learn at his/her own pace instead of trying to learn on a set schedule, along with learning indepence. Have studies been shown that a child starting at a montessori puts them academically ahead down the line? The montessori is much more expensive than the other preschools so we're just trying to decide if the child's experience at the montessori is worth that much extra money. We're willing to pay it if we know it will better benefit them down the line. How do the benefits of the montessori outweigh those of the standard preschool? How does it better prepare them once they enter elementary school? Any information or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My son is 27 months old and I have just started him in preschool 5 days a week. Can this be beneficial or traumatic? The teachers say he's adjusting well and quite verbally advanced compared to others in his age group. However, a lot of my friends think it's a bad idea. I stayed home with him for two years and breastfed. Isn't this a good time for him to get away from me and around other kids more?

I am an American preschool teacher who recently got a new addition to my class - a 4-year-old girl from England. This child is having a hard time getting used to the new environment, mostly because she is very dependent on adults for her basic needs. For instance, she asks a teacher to wipe her nose, put on her socks, and so on. This is not her first preschool setting; she was in preschool back in England.

My question is, could this just be the result of an overbearing parent, or do English daycares/preschools not teach independence until children are older? I know this is a generalization... I'm just asking for your impression so I can start figuring out if it's the kid, the parents, or just learned helplessness.

Hi all! I have a 3 1/2 year old little girl. She is an only child, and has stayed at home with me all of her life. We unfortunately are a one car family, and her father works long hours, so we are at home everyday. She has never had interaction with large groups of children, never been to daycare, etc. I am worried she will not be ready for such a big life change like preschool. she is very intelligent, but very head strong. she wants what she wants and will not stop till she has it her way! I have tried very hard to explain to her, and teach her all the things she will need in order to do well in school. she is not intrested at all. she will tell me... mommy i dont want to go to school! what can i do to get her excited about being a big girl, and starting school? she is the center of attention at home, so im sure it will not be an easy transition having to enter this new phase of life without mommy being there. I am trying to be optomistic, but i can see this turning into a disaster!

now that my own son is 18 months, i'm ready to go back to school. the local community college offers:
-Associate in Early Childhood Education - 4 semesters.
-Early Childhood Education Diploma - 3 semesters.
-Early Childhood Education Certification - 1 semester.

my short term goal is to workin a daycare for now, and eventually own/operate my own in-home daycare (we are going to build a building in the back of our property). my question is: can i find employment in a daycare if i opt to just go one semester and get certified, or do i need a diploma to work as a child care provider?

when i'm ready to get licensed for my own daycare, will i need my associates?
