lots of things. taking turns, developing hand-eye coordination, music and movement, prediction, cause and effect (if someone drops it), fair play (don't skip your neighbor), if you go clockwise then that sets the stage for learning to tell time....

try passing around items of different texture around. many kids have sensory issues and this could be helpful. talk about how the item feels before you pass it. like a cool, smooth stone or a soft, fuzzy slipper.
you can, while passing the ball, sing the song with a different emotion. sing in an angry tone, happy, sad, sleepy.

you could add questions to the passing. Each child can ask or be asked a question before being allowed to pass it on. Examples would be: What was one thing you noticed about our book today? These type of questions get kids to think about what they just saw and increase comprehension.
You could also assign each student a letter and the ball has to be passed in order of the alphabet. This would help connect the letters to their names and many kindergarten teachers will thank you for that skill pretaught before Kindergarten.
You could also use it as a way to line up or transition to a new activity. Draw their names from a pot and they pass on to next name. This would work on hand eye from the passing and interpersonal skills.
Just a few ideas...

Some might possibly be learning...
shapes
colors
textures
slow/fast
music
singing
new words
vocabulary
harmony
working together
and other skills you probably know if you think about it.
In preschool, almost anything a child does could possibly be a learning experience to them, though most, as adults, don't think of it that way. That was one of the neat things about teaching kindergarten..........I was "teaching" them all day, but most of it just seemed like "play" to them!
>>>>>>>>>> OK, but I'm going to bed after this!
Same as you mentioned but do it standing up, in a circle behind each other....pass the ball OVER HEAD....can go forward or back.
Another- same thing, but with legs spread, kids leaning forward and the ball goes backward or forward (between legs) to the next person.
Another- same thing, but they all face the same way and turn around to pass the ball to the next person.
Have fun !
Good night.

They would learn patience, waiting for their turn to have the ball. They would also learn how to sit in a circle environment and pay attention.

You could tell the kids they have to throw the ball at random, but say the name of the kid they are throwing it to. That might be a bit too much, I picture most of the kids either just throwing the ball at an unsuspecting head or taking a solid 5 minutes to decide if they should throw it to Tara, or Chelsea, or Benny, or Norman, or Emma, or Jayden, or Sammy...

Well, personally I found many of those preschool activities kind of pointless when the child could be "learning" something from a book, but anyways...... I guess sharing in general, but in this case the ball?? or if the song was educational, the song?? But why not just play hot potato then?
