I keep on getting confused about this. I always thought that the southern slave states were the confederates and the nothern free states were the Union. But this passage from my History book confused me:
"In April and May, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennesse seceded, bringing the number of Confederate states to eleven. The western counties of Virginia opposed slavery, so they seceded from Virginia and were admitted into the Union as West Virginia in 1863. The four remaining slaves states --- Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Missour --- remained in the Union."

How do the four remaining states remain in the Union, I thought they were confederate?

Will someone clear this up for me?

I have 2 problems that I don't understand. You have to solve these by doing the elimination method. I don't see how you can get one variable gone. please help!

4x+2y=0
9x-3y=-30

3x+2y=-11
5x+5y=-20

you don't have to solve them if you don't want to, just explain, plese. i completely forgot!

I am Taiwanese. I am studying English now. And there is a word"police office"appearing in my text book. It means the place where the policemen work in. But a foreigner teacher in my school said the word" police office"is wrong. He says he has never seen this word, also he corrects the word into"police station". I have looked up the dictionaries of English version, yet I haven't found the word "police office",only "police station". However, the government in Taiwan uses the word "police office". In additio,is the word"police office"the right way to use in English? I would like to know the correctest usage. Thank you a lot!

This is an extra credit question, so I'll pass along 10 points to the person who can show me how they got their answer: "A laser that sits 59" off the floor is aimed at a wall 4 feet away. If the laser is tilted downward by 15 degrees, the dot of light on the wall will be how many inches off the floor?"

I got 53 inches, but the guy who sits beside me got 51 inches. Are either of these correct? Thanks...
