The stick isn't always cut to the true length or the printed measurements aren't lined up with the end of the stick. A lot of times they are close but not always.

You may have bashed it against something and knocked a piece off the end. That makes measurements look longer since you aren't starting at the original end of the stick.

Because the ends get worn off, and there always are slight variations in how the sticks are cut. Plus they can sometimes be a little hard to read.
