I will be travelling to Brazil (Cosigua / Rio de Janeiro / Sao Paulo) in January 2007 on business and was looking for recommendations as to which trains I should ride while I'm there. I enjoy riding trains but do not know much about the rail network in Brazil. Are there any large freight railroads there? Any information at all will be very helpful. Thank you!

There was debate about this at the Watering Hole. I was "out-voted," as we might say here, by two guys who insisted that it's running through Northampton again. (One said it has 20 cars going 70 mph but I talked him down from those Zephyrine figures.) Wikipedia's with me on this ... but I thought I'd ask (and share the ridiculousness). Incidentally, the Watering Hole is the actual name of the pub: Ye Ol' Watering Hole & Beer Can Museum; you could look it up on the Web.

Many, many times a train will come through and go slow, and then slower until it stops for 10-15 or more minutes. I was stuck for 25 minutes one day. This isn't just some little road, this is a major US highway that thousands of comuters take everyday. What if there had been a fire or something and nobody would have been able to respond? It just seems that this shouldn't be allowed.

i was driving on the highway which runs along a track for about 15 miles and on a particular stretch of about 150 yards (it was night) there was a fire centered directly in the middle of the tracks...the flames were uniform as if there were a propane line running down the center of the tracks and the were flames about 8 inches apart ...it was in a straight line and perfectly centered and the flames were the same size and intensity....was this some kind of routine maintenance and if so what were they doing...there was a csx vehicle parked on the side of the tracks also so it appeared controlled...this is the first time in 25 years of driving that stretch of track i have ever seen this...anyone?

I'd like to work with Amtrak, preferably in an onboard position. I've applied via their online job site countless times, but I have a feeling my resume just gets sucked into a black hole on that thing. Does anyone know what I can do to improve my chances of getting an interview (or at least a call)?
