To limit liability, I have suggested that a group with which I am involved register with the state as a non-profit corporation. Going through the complications of 501(c)(3) status isn't important for us. We don't have employees, or any assets other than, potentially, a bank account. The main objection is that we would have to file a tax return. I doubt this would be terribly involved. I can't get an answer on what type of tax return we would need to use. Would we use one for a regular corporate tax return since we're not a 501(c)(3)? How complicated are these returns? We probably bring in $5,000 or less per year from donations and fundraisers.

My spouse and I are both disabled on SSI, early Social Security and his Pension Check. In 2001 he received a large lump sum buyout and we paid off all bills, credit cards, etc. even though the money was taxed highly. The banking institution didn't withhold the correct amt. of taxes and knowing we would owe a huge amount of tax - we didn't file. We know ignorance is no excuse, yet we blindly lived on. About 6 mos. ago the IRS started garnishing approx. $900 per month. Each month we sink further into debt. Currently we have paid our rent, utilities, repaid loans to the few kind relatives and friends that came to our rescue and the much needed prescriptions for the month ($400+ even with insurance). We both have widowed mothers to care for. The doctors, hospitals, labs, etc. are not getting paid so healthcare has stopped. No gas, okay, but we get HUNGARY. We MUST reduce the IRS payments! The mental anguish is certainly taking its toll - how to survive 3 more weeks!

Here in Nevada there is a tip tax taken out of our paychecks. It can total up to half of our wages. Is it like this nation wide? also I feel that if the rich and bussinesses get a tax cut to put more money in there hands why not the same for lower income folks. As far as I'm concerned if you work a job where you get tips it usually pays low wages. more money in rich peoples hands should mean more money in poor peoples hands.

Are you aware that at least half of the answers to your questions are not accurate? I have been reading the questions and answers for US taxes for several weeks now and I am astounded at the amount of WRONG answers. Most of these tax questions can't be answered properly without more information from the asker. Giving outright wrong answers is irresponsible. I would advise all people seeking tax advice to go to irs.gov or your state website and READ the instructions for the forms you need. Perhaps a better question for askers would be "What forms do I need for (fill in the blank)"? Or if you really want advice be more specific with your questions or use the "additional information" feature to add details to your question.

Why do they tax the minimum wage? I mean its already minimum earnings. I belive govt. should have minimum wage which can be tax free (a sustainable standard of living) - and all earning above that should be charged at slab level.

What do you THINK?

Our family may be appearing on a kitchen remodelling show in the near future. Are we going to have to pay a gift tax on the portion of the remodelling we do not contribute financially to? For example, we contribute $5,000 towards a kitchen, and the TV network creates a kitchen worth $20,000. Will we owe taxes on the difference?
