Should Gordon Brown levy a windfall tax on the banks in view of their vast profits? Should he include other businesses? What should be the threshhold? What should be done with the revenue generated?

So I currently live in AZ and did my return and found out VA IRS says I owe then like 1600 from 2001. The thing is I never even lived there till 2002. I asked how they even came up with this amt since I I only lived and worked there for like 5 mos. I filed my 2001 return in VA from the previous yr in AZ. So VA said they estimated what I owed by my 2002 work history. Has anyone ever heard of this? I have been filing taxes since age 16 and am now 28 and never owed more than 400.

I am writing a huge paper for my government class in which I have to come up with a public school system reform that promotes diversity without busing, school of choice, vouchers, or charter schools. I also have to reform the curriculum to a nationwide standard....

In any event, I need to know how school taxes are collected district by district. Does it vary by state/local government/muncipality? Is it a progressive or flat rate tax?

Thanks

My husband's family owns a business and every year we have our taxes done by an accountant that is paid by the business. Everyone in the family goes on one particular day and meets with the accountants. The accountant is supposed to calculate our tax return based on who comes to meet with them first. Last year, my husband and I met with them first. We waited 6 weeks and still we had no idea what our return was going to be. We found out from my husband's siblings that everyone else knew what they were getting even though we were the first to meet with them. So my husband called the accountant's office and asked what happened. They kept telling us that it would take another week. So we waited another week. My husband called again wondering if the documents got lost in the mail. Apparently the accountant got angry at us for calling and thinks my husband was being rude.

My husband went to see these accountants again this year and blamed us for last year's problem.

Here is the deal-- does anybody know how I should file taxes for my particular situation? I have worked in VA all 2006 but in Sept. I got married and moved to MD where my husband lives but kept my job. Since then I have paid MD taxes.
When my husband and I went to HR Block to file they were very confused by the situtation and did not know how to file.
When we tried to file joint married They said that I have not paid sufficient income tax for MD so I owe $1400!!! The thing is I was not living in MD all year to pay all those taxes I was paying taxes for VA. Also if it is done the other way around My husband owes alot of money to VA...but he never lived in VA!!!
Can someone help me or point me in the right direction? We tried to file seperatley but they tell us its the same deal. I have gone to the IRS website but found no help.
We are hoping to file jointly so I can use the hope scholarship credit.

I work 24 and 48 hour shifts an hour from my home. I get no meal stipend and there is no shift meal fund. We have no scheduled meal break, and meals are often interrupted. I was under the impression meals are deductible, as well as toiletries associated with shifts. I do not have great reciepts for my meals. Is there a standard daily deduction.

My husband and I receive a check each month from his mother, who has allowed a natural gas company to build wells on some laskeside property she and her brother own. The money she receives from what the gas wells yield is divided among herself and her three kids. I know the money isn't "gifted" because they're drawn on a business account she created solely for the gas well checks and we received a form last tax season to submit to the IRS. We didn't owe much last year because we had only been receiving the checks for about 3 months. Now that it's been a year, I have no idea what to expect and I want to be able to put away an amount each month so we can be prepared at tax time next year.

Does anyone know or can anyone tell me where I can find out how much I should be putting aside each month?

Thanks in advance!

Also, don't minors get a federal refund?

I believe the process for minors is rather simple but I would like to get it correct so I don't have the IRS tracking me down before I even turn 18!

We had a new roof put on in 2006 - 40 year Owens Corning shingles. I see that metal roofs qualify, but wasn't sure if a regular roof would qualify as being an improvement to insulation.
