My employer for the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007 wasn't withholding my taxes and claimed me as an independent contractor on his taxes. I most definitely was not, and filed an SS-8 request. The govt decided I was an employee, and I've fixed my 2006 tax returns to properly pay the govt.

My employer is now demanding that I pay directly to him the taxes he did not take out for me in 2007, with no proof of how much he paid me or how he arrived at his numbers. I do not trust him (this is a very small business and I had no idea the mess I was getting into). Do I owe them to him to pay to the govt or do I pay the govt directly? Do I have to pay the govt now or when I file my 2007 taxes?

I normally file self employed. In 2005 I changed employers and my first employer closed the doors and went back to Canada. The IRS is now wanting my 2005 tax return and I informed them that I did not have any documents to file with, they then sent me a document regarding reported income with all the wages reported by my second employer only. Please note 1st employer was 1099,2nd employer witholds taxes.I really have no way of knowing what I received different amounts sometimes cash, sometimes check. This employer hated the goverment their taxes and their laws about taxes i can truly see him not filing and giving them the bird as he crosses the border.

? What am i to do.
? If I do not file and they find out later, what are my problems?

things like marriage status, you can deduct hobby expenses but not medical expenses (unless its over 2% of your income)
business can deduct their legal expenses even if they're are at fault, but an individual can't deduct theirs even if they are aquitted. You have to make a choice between taking the standard deduction which is less than half the poverty level or itemizing your deduction. The tax is progressive until you get to about a million dollars then suddenly its a flat tax. If your spouce dies you suddenly have to pay higher taxes. I could go on. I'd like to hear some horror stories of other countrys tax code.

I was wondering what kind of deductions I could claim on next years tax returns. I've heard you could use things for work as long as they excede a preset amount, but I don't know if that can apply to someone working part-time or if there are other things I could deduct because I'm a full time college student.

I start school on Jan 14th - which is when tuition and fees are due. I'm in the military, but because of my choice of university I'm deciding to attend - they will not pay my tuition up front. I first have to pay for the semester and then they reimburse me. The problem is: I will not have that amount of money up front. I was hoping my tax refund will help me out. So how soon can I file my taxes to have that money available to me?

Were divorced in May. He had to pay a lot in taxes filing single, so let him file joint to give him a break. I never signed the return, even though he still had to pay in but, less. Is that illegal, if he forged my name

I would like to stop having taxes withheld from my paychecks. I understand that I will still be liable for paying them come tax season. Is it ok if I go ahead and change my W4 to exempt? I plan on paying my taxes of course, just later. Am I allowed to do this?

Pro-illegals keep making the comment that illegal immigrants pay taxes as if they are making an equal contribution. I just don't understand how they can continue to confidently make this comment considering the majority of illegals are getting paid "under-the-table". Sure, maybe they pay sales tax but they seem to act as if paying sales tax is making an equal contribution in comparison people who pay sales and income tax. Obviously, they're not equal. Real Americans pay both. Plus, a large percentage of their income is being spent in Mexico and not the U.S. so there goes a large portion of the sales tax.
