I just got a notification in the mail that my state tax forms were filed incorrectly. If I agree to the money due, I owe Illinois an additional $821.36 (which includes late payment and interest). But if I disagree, attach my W-2 as proof and send it in. However, I don't know if I'm right or wrong...

My W-2 form has $739.34 in box 17, called State Income Tax. Does that mean I owe them that money or are they wrong in making that change?

I don't understand taxes very well...there's gotta be a better system then this.

Thanks for your answers!

I was wondering if the year to date amount continues to add on from my first stub through my most recent pay check stub, or does the amount shown start over every new year (January 1)?
EX: If I have worked at a company for four years, will my year to date amount show what I have made throughout the four years? Or will it show what I have made from January 2007 to most recent?

I was in the process of moving in January 07' and I never received my tax forms for my previous job. I was a "self-epmloyee" so no taxes were taking out of my checks throughout the year.. I started my job in early 06' and I probably made around $10,000 for the year. What should I do? What are the penalties for not filing on time and how much am I looking at paying? Please help me soon because I know I need to get this taking care of as soon as possible!

I will start living with my fiance starting in August. Can he claim me as a dependent if I am 21 years old and a full time student while he is working full time? Can he put this on his W4 for this tax year even though he is now independent from his parents starting this summer?

We haven't lived together previously, so just wondering if this can be done now for the current tax year.

Is it possible for a professional in the U. S. to recive money as a gift from family members without attracting taxes? Is there a non-taxable limit? If so, what is that amount? What is the tax rate on exceeding that limit?

I would appreciate genuine, simple answers from people who know, not just links, though I'm willing to read the sites as well..
