I am familiar with buying stock, bonds, mutual funds, currencies, options and futures. But I met someone at a party who said they are a fixed income desk manager buying paper for a living.

I am just wondering what he does exactly? What is he buying? Who he buys it from? What he does with it after he buys it?

There are 2 main groups of Investors.

The first group make research solely on Fundamental Analysis. They learn and study everything about the company, product, management, financial reports, analysis reports and etc......including news.

The second group research only on the Technical Charts of the stock. They based their findings on the Candlesticks, Indicators and sometimes charting softwares as well.

Both have their own pros and cons from the research itself. I have known some Traders make money from only one kind of research and wouldn't want to go the extra mile to research the other.

What is your point of view?

Alright, I bought XXX dollars in stocks about a month ago, when the DOW was setting records. Right now, my portfolio has lost about 7% of its worth. 11% when you factor in maintenance fee that i paid upfront.

Is that bad?

I know that I have to form a corporation. But where do I go from there. Would I be able to issue stock anywhere online? Would issuing stock be the same as selling it? Do I already have to have investors on hand to invest? Any other details that would help me would greatly be appreciated. Thank You in advance for your help. As a matter of fact I would like to start a resort in Louisiana but first off get my hands on some real estate that will generate income before the resort gets launched.

I'm thinking of buying something fairly valuable (say £250 max) that's likely to go up in price as a little investment and a bit of fun.

What's best for this? A diamond? ruby? Penny black postage stamp?

it seems like on vanguard.com and fidelity.com, for all the mutual funds the performance significantly diminishes by the 10th year...

like past performance indicates on almost all of the funds from both sides a trend of 1 year: 14% 5: 13% 10: 7%

does this mean after 5 years i should cash in the money and put into another fund or somthing?

If an investor buys a put option for the right to sell shares at $50 a share, and the market price of the stock drops to $40 per share, how is it possible the investor is able to exercise their right to sell the shares at $50 per share? Who would be interested in purchasing stock at $50 per share if they can purchase it for $40 per share?

I don't get the difference between the effective annual interest rate and nominal rate, how does it make the answer for this question any different??
the question is: you are considering a 10 year 1,000 par value bond. its coupon rate is 9 percent, and interest is paid semi-annually. If you require an "effective" annual interest rate (not a nominal rate) of 8.16 percent, then how much should you be willing to pay for the bond?
I used a financial calculator to do the following:
since its semi-annual i calculated payment as (PMT): .09/2 x 1000 = 45
Number of years (N) = 10 x 2 = 20
Interest (I/Y) = 8.16/2 = 4.08
Future Value (FV) = 1000
and i computed PV which equals = 1,056.68
PV is max price investor is willing to pay for the bond, did i get it right, and how is effective vs. nominal interest rate make my answer any different? rather, what does it even mean?
