Need to find undervalued stocks in sectors that are expected to rebound or those that might be in the window to be acquired.

I haven't done a lot of research across the board but have come with some that may meet your criteria. Keep in mind, while I've done research on these, it's important that you are personally comfortable with your own decisions of what issue to purchase:

Tumbleweed - TMWD - Makes software that helps companies move data around bewteen companies and employees. The industry is starting to consolidate and so it could be a target. Pretty decent fundamentals and well below it's historic low. Recent price: $1.37

King Pharma - KG - Operates pharmacies. Sector has been hit bad. Company operates at or better than its peers and its near its 52 week low because the sector is down. Recent price: $10.29

ALU - Lucent - Alcatel - Stock has had a long time in the dumper. The were back up on a run but the telco sector is struggling and European stocks have been getting hit (ALU is European). More recently, there's skepticism as to whether some of management's plans will really imporve profitability. Given all this, why a buy?
.. Industry analysts have moved from negative to neutral - a positive sign.
.. They have over $6B in cash and are cash flow positive
.. They have already trimmed their loses by over half in the last 4 quarters
.. They have proven to be a survivor.
.. They were recently at $14 and have been in a downspin for the last 3 months and have just begun to suggest they may be near a bottom.

Those would be my first bets. I do own some of these as well.

Hope that helps.

Three mistakes new investors make;

A. Concentrating on low priced stocks.
B. Asking strangers whose qualifications and motives can never be known, how to invest "your" money.
C. No mention of your current "asset allocation", time horizon and risk tolerance.

Good luck with your answers.

BTW: What's a good horse to bet on?

Any single stock is not a good idea. Instead, concentrate on a diversified portfolio. This can most often be done by buying good quility mutual funds.
