I'm still in college and dependent on my parents, but I want to start investing. I want to be able to invest easily - i.e. transfer from my bank account regularly, but I don't want to be socked with fees (like Sharebuilder). It seems like a Roth IRA is a good option, but I don't know if I'm eligible to open one given that I'm a dependent.

If tax barriers make it impossible for me to start investing, there's really no incentive to earn extra money and invest it, or to spend more wisely and invest the money I save.

10 points to the person who can give me the best insight into this problem.

What are the steps you need to undertake to effectuate such a transaction? Is this any different than any other "like-kind" exchange? Or am I misinformed about the ability to do such an exchange? Any guidance or referrals to websites would be appreciated.

Ok, say you don't have much money. You can get by, but nothing extravagant.
You have $1500 to invest. In anything. Stocks, loan it to a friend, buy a stack of lottery tickets, run a bingo game, buy something collectable, etc...

What would you do?

I find some couples very secure financially in their retirement age. It is not necessary that they have a great paying job but still have a good funding and are not dependent on their children. Neither do they have any business to increase thier money pool. I wonder how they manage to save & build house & cope up with growing children at the face of keeping ones standard of life in front of the society.

(BP.com, Aug 7, 2006) This statement was made today by Bob Malone, Chairman and President of BP America, Inc., at a press conference in Anchorage, Alaska.

"We deeply regret that it has been necessary to take this drastic action of an orderly and planned shutdown of the Prudhoe Bay oil field.

"On behalf of the BP Group, I apologize for the impact it is having on the nation and the State of Alaska.

"We will be working with State and Federal regulators on plans for the orderly and planned shutdown of Prudhoe Bay. I would like to thank the State of Alaska, Department of Transportation and Alyeska for their current and longer term support.

"In addition, we will be conducting a parallel study with the agencies to determine if it is possible to safely continue operating portions of the field.

I am ripping off my question and details, vague and poorly remembered, from PBS's Frontline series. They aired a program on retirement some time ago. (Hope I haven't turned anybody away by mentioning Frontline. Opinions on the show are polarized. I'd like to hear from both sides on this.)
I wish I could give you all the details I found startling the night I watched the program. It's been a while; if you want more, you might want to visit:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/retirement/
You can view the program in it's entirety.
Here's the deal:
Corporations are ridding themselves of costly pensions at the expense of the workers who must "manage" their 401ks. This can be disadvantageous; we formerly had the clout of large pools of money when employers furnished funds to investors to sustain pensions-no more, you've only the few thousand dollars you've saved. Further, we lost experienced finance mangers that were investing our money. I'm not a planner=my money makes less.
