In the movie 'Waking Life', a character talks about a study that found a random group performed significantly better on day-old New York Times crossword puzzles (people were secluded so they didn't see them personally) than on brand-new ones, which suggests that once hundreds of people have done a crossword puzzle, it becomes easier for others, because the knowledge is "out there" in our collective mind.
=======================================
The Question: Do you feel we have a collective consciousness that works together on a level that's unconscious to the individual? Thoughts, opinions, experiences...?
=======================================
DISCLAIMER: I'm not finding anything that shows this study occurred. It may have just been part of the movie. I'm asking the question here because I think it's a really intriguing idea, and wondering what your thoughts are. :)

Do you feel you've just gotten a new lease on life ? Why?

2006-06-20 09:19:24 · 33 answers · asked by Vicky L 3

i mean not one religion founder would have thought that he was starting a new religion and just taught people about GOD. LIke Christ was a saviour and just spread his message. Prophet Mohammad just spread his teaching, Buddha also just wanted to spread the light and there are many other examples. Then why don't we follow the message of all these great people and why have they changed into strict religions?i mean why do we have a psychology of dividing ourselves up?

what about the people who did not have the the opportunity to be born after the bible was written?...

jesus welcomed all people into heaven. he forgave sinners, & healed ppl w/ diseases, Even though the bible was written AFTER his death

so shouldnt that also mean people b4 the bible should be able to go to heaven as well?

i asked that to a group of catholics and they said all people who are good go to heaven..
i asked that to a group of christians and they were stumped... did not know how to answer.

In a 2002 poll of 100 researchers, 61 believed the answer is no, 9 believed the answer is yes, 22 were unsure, and 8 believed the question may be independent of the currently accepted axioms, and so impossible to prove or disprove.

What do you think and why?

do you think its time for another change so that christians will not persecute gays and other non christians.

back then being gay was thought of as a disease.. and all those who had a disease were thought of as sinners... today there is a theory that peopl are born gay. plus the fact that it is not a disease...

dont u think god is testing us.. instead of persecuting gays and calling them sinners.. we should not tell them they are going to hell cause they are gay and because it says so in the bible...

the mind of people when the bible was written has changed from the mind today.. why cant the bible evolve as well?

I'm wondering what more highly evolved beings (if they exist) might be like as well as what direction our own evolution might take. This comparison of dogs to us vs. us to higher levels of evolution might get at this. How can higher beings better manipulate their environment (we have fingers)? How might their minds work that could be beyond our current understanding? What powers might they have that we don't (dogs probably think that opening doors and getting food out of a can are powers).

I hate those dumb grey smiley faces across a screen, its one thing not to have a picture, or a camera,or scanner to use as a Avatar, but its another thing when their free to make, and gives a identity and personality to your post

What I'm saying is this: if killing a living thing is wrong, then killing plants is also wrong. We pretend it's ok to kill something as long as it doesn't have a "soul." Who are we to decide what has a soul or not. If this so-called god of yours is real, how do we know how he made plants, and whether they have a soul or not. Just some food for though, leave an answer please.

Constantine was in his garden praying or worshiping to pagan gods, then he saw a cross before him and heard a voice say conquer by this, and in the bible (Matthew & Mark, pre-Christianity) Jesus says two houses can't stand against itself, of course he was talking about Satan driving demons out of people, but I think every word Jesus was saying meant more than a given moment, So I believe he was talking about Christianity, standing against Christians, some what like a Trojan horse, "here you go, we want persecute you anymore, but we will rote you from within."

Lets say you had a choice before you. To settle and be unbelievably happy in a kind and humble life with a family and career or to travel the world alone doing Great deeds changing the lives of many thousands somehow for the better but you missed the happiness that would come from love and settlement and belonging. Which would you choose and if you wouldn't how would you hope to compromise between the two?

I'd be very grateful if you could.

I'm just getting in to philosophy after a few debates with an educated friend (who thankfully 'dumbed-down' her explanations for me!) and would like to get in to it further, but how would I go about this?

Do I pick a subject that I would like to discuss the philosophy of and then search for as much material as I can on that particular topic?

Are there any basic, cire texts I could get to grips with as a beginner?

Thank you for your time
