I already tried wikipedia but that didn't work so don't tell me wikipedia. I need to go into detail like about tactics used, equipment, politics and ethical issues, pretty much the whole shebang. And the libraries around chicago didn't have anything. And I need both sides of the war, not just napoleon.

a) Battle of Hastings (1066)

b) Battle of Stamford Bridge (1066)

c) Naseby (1645).

d) Marston Moor (1644).

Now I wanted to take my grandsons to b and d because they are where a and c were effectively decided and are in Yorkshire so it is *their* history and I doubt if they will learn about them in school these days.
I said "soil" because others might say "The Battle of Britain" and maybe that could be true.
BUT - without the need for Harold to march to Stamford Bridge William the Conquerer might not have been able to land in the South and Marston Moor brought Cromwell to the fore and secured the North.
This has affected our whole culture, language, political system and so much else so why aren't our children taught about it?
What do others think?

(Not a homework question, incidentally.)

I have an ancestor who was in his late 20s in 1861, lived in Alabama where his family owned 6 slaves (i.e. not Union sympathizers) though they weren't rich or politically connected, and from his photograph he appears to have been able-bodied. There is no evidence he served during the Civil War in the army or in the Home Guard. He married in 1862 and had 2 children born during the war, also indicating he was at home and not in the field. He was not an only child or the sole support of anybody at the beginning of the war.
No tales survive of him through his descendants; I only know his name through genealogical research.
Any idea how he would have avoided service? (I know that northern men could legally pay other men (usually $300-$500 and usually Irish immigrants) to take their place, but this doesn't seem to have been an option for Confederates.)

Thanks for any good suggestions.
