Natural gas, kerosene, and candles were all used during this period depending on where you lived. Electricity would have been more likely in a town of some size. Rural areas would have depended on the other three and some may have had electricity from the average farm windmill.

Electricity was predominant in the major towns and cities of Europe and the US. Rural America was not connected fully to the network until the late 1950's. Of course, poorer families could not afford electricity and it was only after the war that the ghetto areas began to be fitted out (it needs all the walls to be opened so pipes can be removed and cables fitted etc.). Remember the building of the Hoover Dam, that gave electricity to people who had never had it before.

Gas was used in towns well into the 1950 mainly because of the expense of replacing all the pipes. You can still find the old street lights that used gas in some older parts of some towns.
