The Hopewell or Woodland Indians did indeed travel and trade with related and non related tribes.Ojibwas from the north and Indians from Florida also traded. Many specific types of flint points came from certain areas and that is one of the ways to tell how much trade was going on.

Where I live, there are many Indian burial mounds and I believe the mound builders were part of and during the same time as the Hopewell/Woodland Indians. There were , at one point, very large population centers or cities for these tribes. The Cahokia Mounds near St. Louis, is just one of them.

Explorers Joliet and Father Marquette both made their travels through my area on the Illinois River and this was pretty close to the beginnings of European trade with the Indians.

Water the hopewell culture was based around the river system, so whatever you are talking about transporting it would be by water, by canoe.
