a.d. stands for anno domini, which translates to 'in the year of our lord'
What you're looking for is anything from 1 b.c. to 1000 b.c. -or- 1 a.d to 500 a.d.
It goes like this...
1000 b.c., 999 b.c., 998 b.c. (they're going backward, working towards....) 2 b.c., 1 b.c.
Then, you start counting forward..
1 a.d., 2 a.d., 3 a.d., etc. (all the way up to today - 2007 a.d.)
These days, people don't really use 'bc' & 'ad' anymore. It's now more common to see 'bce' (before the common era) and 'ce' (common era)

B. C. does stand for "Before Christ", but A. D. is for "Anno Domine", Latin for "Year of our Lord". It is helpful to know that these divisions are inaccurate; Christ had to have been born sometime between "6 B. C." and "4 B. C.", which is when King Herod the Great died. But we're stuck with the system now.
Google Egyptian, Greek, or Roman Mythology for lots of pictures of ancient gods.
A simple time frame (these are approximations):
1. Prehistory: 40,000 B. C. to 6,000 B. C.
2. Ancient Times, or Antiquity: 6,000 B. C. to 476 A. D. (the last Roman emperor lost his throne.
3. Middle Ages: 476 A. D. to the Fourteenth Century
4. Renaissance (the start of the modern world): 14th through 16th centuries.
5. Age of Enlightenment: 18th Century
6. Modern Period: 18th Century through now.
You can put numbers 4, 5 and 6 together and just say "The Modern World". Some books will give slightly different dates, but this is accurate enough for a simple outline.
Your 1559 painting would come under "Renaissance".

B.C. is Before Christ
A.D. is NOT After Death- is stands for Anno Domini- which is Latin for Year of Birth (as in Christ's Birth).
1. Which ancient gods? Greek or Roman?
2. You may find photos of artwork dating back to 1000 B.C. and 500 A.D. Most likely you will find photos of statues of the gods.
3. You may find murals on walls of ancient homes- like in Pompeii- mostly mosaics and murals depicting ancient gods.
The painting in 1559 is way past your time requirement.
A time frame is like a 'guide' you are to use the dates 1000 B.C. to 500 A.D. as your time frame or guide.
For statues- try "Googling" the names of the gods and goddesses you are thinking of. I suggest you try the "images" portion of Google.
There are many statues of ancient Greek and Roman gods done in the years 500 B.C. to the first century A.D.
Then, I suggest you try "Googling" (include images) for Pompeii + murals.
Good luck.

B.C. means before Christ
adv. Abbr. B.C. or B.C.
In a specified year of the pre-Christian era.
A.D. does NOT mean after death.
A.D. means Anno Domini, a Latin phrase meaning “in the year of our Lord.”
A.D. is an abbreviation used with a date, indicating how many years have passed since the birth of Jesus.
The abbreviation may appear before the date (a.d. 1988), or it may appear after the date (1988 a.d.).
It stands for Anno Domini, a Latin phrase meaning “in the year of our Lord.”
